On June 15th, Professor Dan Scherson testified before the U.S House of Representatives Subcommittee on Energy Committee on Science, Space, and Technology at a hearing on Innovation in Solar Fuels, Electricity Storage, and Advanced Materials. Professor Scherson is the Frank Hovorka Professor of Chemistry and Director of the Ernest B. Yeager Center for Electrochemical Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, and recently concluded his term as the President of The Electrochemical Society.

In his testimony, Professor Scherson laid out some of the fundamental problems that remain to be resolved if we are to achieve true energy sustainability.  Solutions, he noted, “demand a fundamental understanding of the basic processes underlying energy conversion and energy storage at a microscopic level and the development of spectroscopic and structural probes with highly spatial and temporal resolution to monitor individual atomic and molecular events.” He urged the Subcommittee to increase research support from the federal government so as to fund rising generations of research scientists so that we can develop the requisite knowledge.
