Ohio's Economy: A Test Case for Trump's Climate Decision
Susan Helper, the Frank Tracy Carlton Professor of Economics at Case Western Reserve University, discussed with Energywire the reasoning behind President Trump's decision to pull out of the 2015 Paris Accord. While the president cites limits on carbon dioxide emissions as placing US cities at an economic disadvantage, evidence from Ohio tells a different story.
"I was surprised by the president's reasoning. It comes from an old idea that you have to choose between the climate and the environment-and jobs-and that's not true," Professor Helper said. Further, Professor Helper discussed opportunities for Ohio that have arisen out of recent shifts towards renewable energy and energy efficiency, specifically in the steel sector.
