Umut Gurkan, Wilbert J. Austin Professor of Engineering, has co-authored a new publication by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Titled On Leading a Lab: Strengthening Scientific Leadership in Responsible Research, the work explores strategies for fostering ethical and effective scientific leadership in research environments.
Chirag Kharangate, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, was awarded the 2024 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Electronic & Photonic Packaging Division (EPPD) Early Career Engineer Award at this year’s ASME InterPACK Conference.
Chengyu Li’s journey into engineering began with curiosity about the natural world and a desire to apply mathematical and physical principles to solve real-world problems. Now, as an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Li’s doing just that.
For Peng Wang, the engineering process is a journey of discovery and innovation, beginning with the critical step of identifying a problem. The problem he is addressing? Improving operational safety, process stability, efficiency, quality assurance and sustainability in manufacturing. Through creative solutions, Wang turns abstract concepts into practical prototypes, something he finds very rewarding.
CWRUbotix, Case Western Reserve University’s robotics team, competed in the 22nd annual MATE ROV World Championship, hosted in Kingsport, Tennessee, in June. In this competition, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are deployed underwater to perform various tasks related to ocean observation and developing systems to combat climate change.
Julian Town, mechanical and aerospace engineering student, spends summer at Northrop Grumman Corporation as systems engineering intern in the Space Systems Division.
In a continuation of its 2025 rankings of best graduate and professional schools, U.S. News & World Report placed Case Western Reserve University at No. 51 among all engineering schools. This marks a two-spot rise for Case School of Engineering, as U.S. News shifted its methodology to focus more on research and faculty productivity.
In March, the Department of Defense announced $221 million in awards for basic defense-related research projects as part of the Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) program. This year, two Case School of Engineering researchers will participate on two separate projects.
Earlier this year, the Veale Center swimming pool was a testing site for Kathryn ‘Kati’ Daltorio’s Crab Lab thanks to a collaboration with the Motley Scuba Diving Club. Supported by the Department of Defense, researchers in the Crab Lab, including PhD students Mingyu Pan and Yifeng Gong, are creating a waterproof crab robot that is capable of searching for and removing underwater unexploded ordnance (UXO) in shallow water.
Meet Kush Idnani, aerospace and mechanical engineering graduate. With dreams to be a design engineer for F1, Idani came to CWRU for the education, but is leaving with that and so much more.
